Summary

One of the most complex issues faced by healthcare workers is the fact that they are ill-prepared for losing patients, especially in intensive care and cancer units. This manual is designed to support healthcare workers with their grief either individually or in groups. It contains three chapters that reflect on grief as follows: dealing with grief on a personal level, dealing with grief as a team, and the rituals of grief.

By providing professionals with support to deal with their grief, institutions are able to prevent burnout that would otherwise have a negative impact on workers’ quality of life and patient care.

Potential Use

The bereavement manual can be used by different units at healthcare centers, hospital and clinics that work with adult and pediatric patients in cancer, intensive care and palliative care units, as well as other patient support areas.

Development Status

TLR9 – the manual is ready for implementation at healthcare centers, hospitals and clinics.

Advantages

Provides an opportunity to reflect upon grief by posing several questions and inviting healthcare professionals to express their feelings on the matter. Likewise, it works with bereavement support and burnout syndrome scales for establishing a baseline to determine the status of professionals on the matter.

This manual is the result of a FONIS project, which means it is the outcome of a two-year or longer study whose results have been tested in the public health sector.
