Carob Tree Extract against Human Pathogenic Yeast

Image

Summary

This technological development has created a useful plant-based product suitable for controlling outbreaks of Candida spp. yeast.

Candida attacks the skin and soft tissue on human genital organs and mucous membranes and potentially other areas of the body. Candidiasis (or a yeast infection) tends to produce a range of symptoms including redness of skin, a thick white vaginal discharge, burning or itchy sensation and, on occasion, swelling and pain. It is included among the category of frequently-occurring medical conditions.

There are several different types of antifungal medications on the market today, but the most frequently prescribed alternatives belong to a group of topical (ovules and creams) and oral (pills) treatments known as azole antifungals.

This innovation consists of developing a dermatologically-applied agent extracted from carob tree leaves for controlling yeast infections. The carob tree species is endemic to South America and grows in Central to Northern Chile, Southern Peru, Central to Eastern Bolivia and throughout most of Central-Northern Argentina

Potential Applications

  • This extract has dermatological properties suitable for controlling yeast growth as well as the symptoms caused by Candida spp.

Development Status

TRL-4: Successful trials with the active ingredient in a controlled environment.

Advantages

  1. Plant-based compound for treating disease.
  2. Using plants endemic to Chile to treat medical conditions.
  3. Fewer side effects compared to non-natural medications.
  4. The source of raw material is abundant, and its extraction is sustainable (it is obtained from the leaves of the tree).
