UC consolidates its leadership in patenting in Chile, with first place for the sixth consecutive year.
Amidst all the difficulties arising from the pandemic, last year the university filed 33 patent applications with the National Institute of Industrial Property, INAPI, (the Chilean Patent and Trademark Office) bringing the total count to more than 900 patent applications to date.
These patents are used to transfer innovations from university researchers to organizations, companies and the public sector, through various types of agreements.
On the occasion of the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day, UC was recognized for the sixth consecutive year as the number one institution in Chile in terms of patent applications, according to the annual ranking of applications published by INAPI (National Institute of Industrial Property).
In 2020, UC filed 33 patent priority rights—22 domestic and 11 through the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) which is used to apply for patents to protect inventions. During the same period, UC processed one industrial secret and 11 copyright registrations. Moreover, 47 patents were granted last year, for a year-to-date total of 212 patents granted up to December 2020.
