Summary

The main objective of the Alstroemeria Genetic Improvement Program is to obtain new native flower cultivars for the purpose of positioning native Chilean flora on international markets. To this end, the Program has focused on growing Alstroemerias as garden and potted plants, which set it apart from the other varieties currently available internationally—most of them are grown as cut flowers (for flower arrangements) and are from the Netherlands.

Potential Use

  • Plants have a more compact architecture suitable for use in pots and/or parks and gardens.
  • Plants have a longer flowering period and smaller flowers.

Development Status

TRL-3: Experimental proof of concept

Advantages

  • Varieties are developed on the basis of native Chilean plants.
  • Access to new ornamental plant markets.
  • Varieties are more disease- and pest-resistant.
  • Plants have a longer flowering period.
  • Plants suited for small-scale production (family and peasant farming).
