Prognostic test to predict survival in patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Image

Summary

At the time of patients’ initial diagnosis with acute myeloid leukemia, this test can be used to identify which patients have a low probability of being cured with conventional chemotherapy, making is advisable to perform a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The research team identifies a genetic fingerprint by studying the bone marrow stroma obtained from an aspiration biopsy or myelogram.

Potential Applications

Currently, patients with acute myeloid leukemia receive chemotherapy to control their disease. In some of the cases with the worst prognosis, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant is required as the only option for cure. This test would allow us to better identify which patients require this more aggressive and expensive treatment.
